Untitled (Mold)
Untitled (Mold)
Untitled (Mold) is a marble sculpture that takes the form of a casting mold—an object that normally exists only as a temporary stage in the production of another sculpture. Carved entirely from a single block of stone, the work reproduces elements associated with casting, such as parting lines, seams, pouring channels and the outer shell of the mold itself. Although these details suggest an additive process, every element is produced subtractively through carving. The sculpture therefore occupies an ambiguous position between tool, process and finished object: what would normally disappear once the casting is completed becomes permanent, while the object that the mold appears to anticipate never exists.
By translating a temporary production device into marble—a material historically associated with permanence and completion—the work brings the usually invisible process of making into the foreground. The resulting contradiction allows the sculpture to appear simultaneously unfinished and complete, functional and purposeless, familiar and structurally impossible.
