thingies
The series Untitled (Thingies) developed organically over time. Although each work evolved individually, they all originate from the simple function of a wedge. In some of the sculptures, this reference is echoed in their plinths. The wedge is an element that, while ensuring the sculpture stands upright, remains in a sense an additional component, since the sculpture’s imbalance is itself an artificially created problem, one that is resolved by the original wedge. The wedge thus became the starting point for the entire body of work, in which individual conical elements are inserted into one another to ultimately form larger structures and systems. It is precisely the principle of the inclined plane—where a point is reached beyond which no further movement is possible—that determines, through the individual components, the dimensions and forms of the finished sculptures.
Another aspect shared by all the works is their potential modularity. Here, the work returns to its central theme of function and non-function. The sculptures are not functional in the sense that they were created with a specific design purpose, although their aesthetic may partially offer such an interpretation. It is precisely their lack of functionality, however, that defines them as works of art.
